360networks Moves its Services into California and Beyond
Written on Thursday, May 08, 2008 by Joy Milkowski
360networks, which has traditionally focused on bringing wholesale VoIP to smaller networks throughout the Western US, is now looking to expand into more major cities. It has recently brought its services into Los Angeles and San Diego and plans on moving into Dallas and Chicago this year and Denver and Seattle shortly thereafter.
360 first began offering wholesale VoIP in 2006, taking over Qwest’s territory. Since expanding further, after signing agreements with such firms as Verizon, 360 moved into California, and into subsequent states.
But the company, whose network goes as far east as Chicago, says it has no plans to expand its network into the eastern US because that would require purchasing off-network facilities.
360’s customers include small Internet service providers and cable companies to large wholesale carriers and resellers of termination traffic.
Late last year, the company deployed optical equipment from Infinera in order to light its own network between Chicago and Denver – a previously leased route. That move not only gave the carrier plenty of capacity on that route, it also allowed 360 to launch wholesale VoIP service in Iowa and Nebraska.
Whether your company is looking for dark fiber to connection locations all over the US, Ethernet circuits across the Atlantic Ocean or an Internet connection to your school or office location, NEF offers you the power of choice.

XO Communications Fine Tunes Its Ethernet Over Copper
Written on Tuesday, May 06, 2008 by Joy Milkowski
With businesses demanding higher Ethernet speeds than ever before, XO Communications has started a new service which offers speed at 15 Megabits per second. Originally expecting a 2 to 4 Mb/s range of demand, XO is fine tuning its Ethernet over copper to meet today’s high speed requests.
The service will begin this summer and will hit small enterprise locations first, followed by larger SMB sites where companies are reluctant to pay for a construction build, but will pay for high speed as long as XO can get it to them.
By looking at buildings that are within the line-of-sight range of its broadband wireless services, XO can extend the reach of its Ethernet offering and use Hatteras gear within the building to distribute the higher speed service. But, determining which buildings can and should be served will be part of this summer’s fine-tuning process.
Are you looking to connect to a robust, secure network? NEF has the solution for you. We specialize in creating and designing optimal communications networks for enterprise clients and telecommunications carriers. Contact NEF today and begin to explore the many ways to begin, or improve upon your connectivity situation.

EMBARQ to Use Ciena’s CN 4200 FlexSelect
Written on Thursday, May 01, 2008 by Joy Milkowski
EMBARQ Corp. has selected Ciena’s CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Series Platform for deployment throughout its network. Ciena touts the platform as redefining the term “multiservice” for the telecommunications industry because it creates a new paradigm for network operators considering transport technology and applications.
The telecom service provider chose the CN 4200 because it will help increase bandwidth to better service increased capacity demands while also carrying a multitude of types including voice, video, and data traffic. This eliminates the need to purchase additional equipment per type.
NEF can help you find bandwidth the fits your company’s needs. Whether you transmit voice, video or data traffic, NEF has the solution that’s right for you. Contact us today to learn more.

Things are Looking Up for Level 3
Written today at 02:41PM by Joy Milkowski
Fortunately for Level 3, demand for content delivery continues to grow. The telecommunication company has experienced an upswing in profit this year, due to some recent decisions.
For starters, Level 3 added content delivery network (CDN) services to its portfolio. CDN group consistently adds at least 10 percent growth to the bottom line. For example, the first quarter of 2008, CDN brought in $100 million of the company’s total $1.09 billion sales.
However, the largest source of revenue continues to be Level 3’s wholesale division, which brings in over 50 percent of total sales, followed by the enterprise group at 25 percent.
Level 3’s sales have increased 3.4 percent since last year which has helped to push the company’s stock to it highest gain since the summer of 2002.
Aside from market demand, Level 3 has solved its backlog problem. With the installation of a new order entry system called Unity, which will handle two-thirds of the high-margin revenue by the end of the year, Level 3 can move beyond the bottleneck and focus on increasing its revenue.
NEF is one of the nation’s top telecommunications brokerage firms, offering 25 years of industry experience and a proven methodology for providing its customers with the best networks, information and pricing available. We can provide a broad spectrum of products from dark fiber solutions to high bandwidth, fully managed optical services.
